In our Salesforce org, all sales team users have access to create reports. We have added some custom report types to create reports that cannot be created using the standard report types available in Salesforce.
For data security reasons, some fields were required to be removed from the custom report types so that the reports could not access the data of those fields.
As a system admin, I solved this issue by removing the fields from custom report types. In this Salesforce tutorial, I will explain how to add and remove fields to report types in Salesforce.
Remove Fields to Report Types in Salesforce
To remove fields from the custom report types in Salesforce, navigate to the Setup page of Salesforce and follow the below steps.
1. On the setup page, go to the Quick Find box, search, and select Report types.

2. In the report types setup window, select the custom report type from which you have to remove fields.

3. In the section Fields Available for Reports, click on the Edit Layout button.

4. In Lightning, we cannot remove the object fields from the layout sections. Here, we will create a new section and move the non-required fields to that section so that they won’t appear on the page layout.

5. Drag the unwanted fields to the new section, then click the Delete button of the new section.

6. As we click on the delete button, a warning message will appear on the screen, notifying us that all the fields of the section that we will delete will be moved back to the available fields. Here, click the OK button.

7. As we click on the OK button, the fields we added in the deleted new section will move back to the Available fields and appear as Not used in the Page layout.
8. At last, click Save to apply the changes to the report-type page layouts.
To check that the field is removed from the custom page layout, open the report builder and select the custom report type from which we removed the fields.

This way, we can remove the fields from the layout of the custom report type in Salesforce Lightning.
Add Fields to the Report type in Salesforce
To add the fields on the layout of Salesforce lightning report types, navigate to the setup and follow the steps below.
1. In the Quick Find box, search then select Report types.
2. Select the custom report type in which you have to add the fields to the page layout.
3. In the report type setup, click the Edit layout button in the Fields Available for Reports section.

4. In the View dropdown on the right sidebar, select the section to which you want to add the fields.

5. Drag the available fields to the page layout of the respective section.

6. To add any lookup field to the page layout, select the section view and click on Add fields related via lookup.

7. Select the fields and then select the related fields from the checkboxes and click the OK button.
8. At last, click on the Save button to apply the changes to the page layout of the custom report type.
Now, the fields added to the page layouts will be visible on reports using the custom report type.
This way, we can add the fields to the page layout of the custom report type in Salesforce Lightning.
Conclusion
In Salesforce’s custom report-type layouts, there is no direct way to remove the fields via drag and drag-and-drop method, so we take a different approach to remove the fields from the custom page layouts that we have discussed in this Salesforce tutorial.
By following the above steps, we can remove and add the fields from the page layouts of the custom report type in Salesforce and efficiently manage the layouts of report types.
