I was working as a Salesforce admin and part of a team working on a new project. Everyone needed an easy way to communicate and share updates, so I was assigned the task of creating a Chatter group in Salesforce for the project.
Here, I will explain what a chatter group in Salesforce is, its uses, and how to create chatter group in Salesforce in a step-by-step manner.
What is Chatter in Salesforce?
Salesforce Chatter is a private corporate social network, similar to Facebook or Twitter, that connects an organization’s employees with each other and enables enterprises to share data and information among individual employees and teams.
These chat groups are classified as either public or private. Anyone can access Public Groups, but private groups can only be accessed by group members. We can also allow customers to view the activities of the chatter group.
All users holding a Standard Salesforce License have the privilege of using Chatter services for free. Salesforce provides three specific Chatter licenses for users so that we can create a Chatter User.
- Chatter Free.
- Chatter External.
- Chatter Only (Plus).
Why do we use Salesforce Chatter?
The Salesforce Chatter, a powerful collaboration software solution, empowers employees to connect, collaborate, and share files, data, and expertise using Chatter. Following are some uses for which we can use Salesforce Chatter:
- Post status updates and questions regarding day-to-day tasks.
- Share our work and ideas in real-time.
- Privately collaborate on sensitive projects.
- Follow specific service records or sales cycles.
- Collaborate with customers directly.
What is Chatter Feed in Salesforce?
The Chatter Feed in Salesforce is where users can view and react to posts, comments, etc, shared by other users. It is like a timeline or stream of feeds on the user’s dashboard that chronologically displays real-time updates and activities.

Feeds in Salesforce provide information about what is going on within the Salesforce environment and what changes and updates occur related to user work to keep users informed.
Additionally, the feed-in Salesforce consists of activities in the form of key components called “FeedItems,” which are used to create the chatter object in Salesforce.

What is Chatter Group in Salesforce?
In the table below, I explained some terms related to the Salesforce chatter that we need:
| Feature | Characteristics |
| Feeds | All updates and activities, including posts, questions, and attachments, can be viewed in the feed section. |
| Groups | The groups help organize content and discussion. Each group can be public or private. |
| Posts | The posts are the building blocks of feeds and groups, where we can post various content types, including files, text posts, pictures, and URLs. |
| Files | Files are a company’s resources for recording data. When you click the file tab, you can use an existing file or upload a new one. |
| Likes & Bookmarks | We can interact with the post by liking or bookmarking it. So it helps us to show our interest in the post. |
| People & Profiles | A profile is a structure that defines users’ accessibility to objects and data. The user can have permissions from their profile, such as read, write, and delete, and based on these permissions, they can access the chatter group. |
Create a Chatter Group in Salesforce
In the following steps, I will explain how to create a chatter group in Salesforce.
- Go to App Launcher, then search for Salesforce Chatter and click on it.

- Then, the Salesforce Chatter app will open, and you will see the Chatter and Groups tabs. As you click on the chatter tab, you will see all feeds that you or other members posted in chatter. Now, we want to create a chat group.

- To create the chatter group, click the drop-down or click on the group tab, then click the New Group option.

- Now, enter the Name of the group. The description and information are optional, as you can provide a brief introduction about your group.

- Then, by default, the running user will be the Owner of this group. You can change the owner. In the Access Type, we have two options: Private and Public.
- If you select the public option, you cannot select the Allow Customers option, but if you select private, you can allow customers to access it. After that, click the Save & Next button.

- In this step, you can add an image(Group Icon) to the chatter group, and for that, click on the Upload Image button and upload a picture. After adding the image, click on the Next button.

- In this step, we will add members to the group. To add members, click on the Add button adjacent to the people’s name, and we can also select the status of a member or manager in the group.
After adding members to the chatter group, click on the Done button.

- As we click on the done button, a chat group will be created with the name that we provided, as shown in the picture below. Here, we can post, add polls, and ask questions.

- As you scroll down, you will see that we can also manage members, files, and records in this Chatter group. You can store the files by clicking on the Upload File button, and you can also access existing files.

- Now, when you post to Chatter, you enter your thoughts or questions in the post, share an update (text box), and click the Share button. Then, as you post anything, you will see your posts in the Chatter feed with likes and comments.

In this way, we can create a group and add posts to Salesforce Chatter.
Conclusion
I hope you have an idea about Salesforce Chatter and why we need to use it. After that, I explained what a chatter group is and how to create a chatter group in Salesforce. After that, I also explained how to add members and images to the chat group.
