As a Salesforce admin, I once received a requirement from the Sales team to enable the feature of inline editing to the reports so that they could analyze and edit the corrections on the current report and avoid creating another report.
In this Salesforce tutorial, I will explain inline editing on reports and how to Edit Fields Inline on the Reports in Salesforce with inline editing.
What is Inline Editing in Salesforce?
In Salesforce, inline editing is a feature that allows us to change the values of fields directly from the list view or reports. With inline editing enabled, we can edit the record values without opening the record through the list view. In the list view, we can only edit the records that are visible or added to the list view.
Inline Editing of Report Fields in Salesforce
In Salesforce, inline editing allows us to report from the list view. If we have enabled inline editing, we do not have to go to the particular record to edit it. When permissions are assigned correctly, users can edit certain fields for up to 200 records at a time.
By enabling inline editing in Salesforce, we can edit the values of the report columns. This is helpful when you have to make small changes to an existing report. For example, if you have a report on the Opportunity stage and there is a change in some opportunity stage, you can update those changes through inline editing instead of creating a new report.
Salesforce Reports Inline Editing Limitations
Inline editing in Salesforce reports allows us to edit the data on the reports. However, we should be aware of some limitations when performing inline editing on reports.
- Not all users will be able to edit the report through inline editing due to permission restrictions.
- If the object has multiple record types, add the record type as a filter in the list view.
- List view inline editing does not support controlling or dependent picklists.
Edit Fields inline on the Salesforce Report Page
Now, log in to your Salesforce developer account to edit fields through inline editing on the report page and follow the steps below.
1. On the Salesforce Lightning Setup page, search Reports and Dashboard in the Quick Find box, and from the options in the dropdown, select Report and Dashboards Settings.

2. In the Report and Dashboard Settings, activate the checkbox Enable Inline Editing in Reports (Lightning Experience Only) and click the Save button to apply changes.

3. Now, on the Salesforce Lightning setup page, click on the App Launcher, search, and select Reports from the dropdown menu.

4. On the Reports page, we will see a list of reports. From here, select a report for Inline Editing. I have selected the New Leads Report.

5. In this step, we first have to enable Inline Editing by clicking on the button with the pencil icon Enable Field Editing.

6. After enabling field editing, a pencil icon will appear when we hover the cursor on the column values. Click on that pencil icon and edit the fields. I have edited an Email field, as shown in the picture below.

In the same way, I have updated the Stage field of the leads report, as shown in the picture below.

7. After making the required changes through Inline Editing, click the Save button.

As we click on the Save button, the report will be updated with our changes. So, now we have successfully edited a Report by Inline Editing in Salesforce Lighting.
Conclusion
I hope you understand inline editing in Salesforce reports. By following the above steps, you will be able to enable inline editing and edit the values in the reports.
