Our Salesforce org has a custom object, project, to track all the ongoing project activities. We had to link the Client(Account ) to the Project to track specific clients’ projects. On the client’s detail page, we could see the projects.
A lookup relationship was needed with the Project object, so the project management team wanted to display the related project of a specific client on the record page of the Account object.
As a solution, I created a related list on the Project object to display the projects related to the specific Accounts. Let me explain how to create a related list in Salesforce.
What are Related Lists in Salesforce
In Salesforce, related lists are displayed as sections on the detail page of the object record. The standard example of a related list is the Opportunities and Contacts sections on the Account record page.
We can view these related records in that section without exiting the current record page. These related lists would make it easy to access and manage all lookup object-related information in one place and streamline record management.
How Related Lists Work in Salesforce
Related lists create relationships between objects and show records on the detail page of a parent object.
Salesforce creates relationships between objects through lookup fields and master-detail relationships.
These relationships specify the connections between a parent object and its related child object. Using the object relationship, we can set up these related lists on the parent object’s detail page in Salesforce.
Before creating a related list on an object record page, ensure that the Object has a lookup relationship with the object you want to add to the related list.
Create Related Lists in Salesforce Lightning
To create a related list in Salesforce Lightning, navigate to the setup page of Lightning and follow the steps below.
- On the setup page of Salesforce Lightning, click on the Object Manager tab. In the Object Manager tab, select the object you want to create the related lists. In this example, I have selected the Account object.
- In the Object setup, click on Page Layouts and select the object’s default page layout.

- In the Page layout setup, click on the related lists, then drag the object’s associated items to the related lists section.
- After adding the item to the related lists section, click the Save button to apply the changes.

- Now, go to the object record tab, open any record, and in the related lists, you will see the object item that you have added.

This way, we can create related lists in Salesforce Lightning by following the above steps.
Create Related Lists in Salesforce Classic
To create a related list in Salesforce Classic, navigate to the setup page and follow the steps below.
- On the setup page, go to the build section on the left-hand side and click on the Customize dropdown. Click on the dropdown of the object you want to create a related list, and then select Page Layouts.
- In the page layouts setup, click on the Edit button of the default page layout.

- In the edit window of the page layout, click on the Related Lists, then drag and drop the related list item to the related list section.
- At last, click Save to apply the changes.

- Now go to the accounts tab and open any account record; you will see the section Projects we added as a related list there.

In this way, we can create a related list in Salesforce Classic.
How to Create a Custom-Related List in Salesforce
In Salesforce, a custom-related list is a list of records that we want at the bottom of each record.
- Navigate to the object tab in which you want to create the custom-related list.

- Select a record from the Objects tab.

- In the object’s record page, click the settings icon at the top and select Edit Object.

- On the object’s setup page, click on the Page Layouts. Then, select the default page layout of the object.

- In this window, click on the Related Lists, then drag the list item to the Related Lists section and click the Save button.

- In the pop-up window, click the OK button to confirm the changes.

- After saving the related list, the newly created custom-related list is shown under the New York Times.

In this way, we can create a custom-related list in Salesforce by following the above steps.
Edit Columns and Buttons in the Related List of Records in Salesforce
In Salesforce-related lists, you may need to adjust the column order. For example, in the Contacts related list, the email column should follow the phone column. We can customize this customization by editing the related lists.
In the example below, I will explain how to edit a related list column for an Account object in Salesforce Lightning.
- Navigate to the Account tab and open an account record. On the Account record page, click the settings icon at the top and select Edit Page.

- The edit page will open in the Lightning App Builder. Here, go to the right-hand bar and click on the Account (previewed).

- Go to the related lists in which you want to edit the columns and button, and click on the wrench icon.

- Now, in the Columns section, you can add or remove the fields from the left-right arrow, and using the up-down arrow, we can adjust the position of the fields column in the related list.

- From the buttons section, we can add or remove the buttons and adjust their position with the arrow buttons.

- After making the changes in the column and button, click OK. At last, click Save in the page layout setup to apply the changes.

This way, we can edit the columns and buttons for the related list in Salesforce.
