Salesforce Document holds information like content in the form of PDFs and images.
In this Salesforce tutorial, I will explain the Salesforce document object. I will also explain the procedure of creating documents in Salesforce.
Additionally, I will explain to you Salesforce’s “My Personal Documents”.
Salesforce Document Object
Salesforce Document is nothing other than the “Document” standard object. In Salesforce, there is a standard object named Document that is used by the users to store and manage files.
The file in the document object in Salesforce is of any type. It can be a PDF, spreadsheet, image, docx, or any other. However, there is one limitation of this “Document Object Salesforce” that it is only available in the Salesforce Classic user interface.
It does not mean that you can’t upload the files in Salesforce Lightning. You can do that, but for this, there is another object.
Creating Documents in Salesforce
Here are the steps to create a document in Salesforce Classic.
Step-1: First, we need to log in to Salesforce Classic. For this, click on “Avatar” and select “Switch to Salesforce Classic”.

Step-2: Click on the “Plus Icon” (➕) in the top tab bar of the screen to upload the document to the personal document.

Step-3: Search and Select the “Documents” tab from the list of tabs.

Step-4: Click on the “New” button to upload new personal files and documents.

Step-5: Enter the following details to upload the document.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Document Name | Give a name to the document. |
| Document Unique Name | In most cases, this is the same as the document name, which is why it is auto-set. But you can change it if required. |
| Indicate Document is Internal | If checked then users shouldn’t share the file outside the org. |
| External Available Image | If checked, then users shouldn’t share the file outside the org. |
| Folder | Change folder from New York Times to others if required. |
| Description | The description states that the image size is less than 20k. This will help the user to choose the image wisely in case of size-restricted fields. |
| Keywords | Keywords help in finding the document easily. |
| Select the File | You can either upload the file or provide a link to an image. Please note – a quota error will appear in case the document size is greater than the available space in salesforce. |
Step-6: To finally save the document, click on the “Save” button. If we want to cancel the in-progress upload process, click on the “Cancel” button.

With this, we have successfully uploaded the document in the document object in Salesforce Classic.
Salesforce My Personal Documents
Maybe you have observed that when you try to insert a document in Salesforce, it shows you the pop-up window to add the file from “My Personal Documents”.

So, let’s understand what this is “My Personal Documents in Salesforce”.
“My Personal Documents” is a private document library and only the user who uploaded the files in it is allowed to access it. You can store different types of files, such as images, presentations, spreadsheets, etc.
Whatever you have stored in the “Document Object” in Salesforce Classic. You get all such files in Salesforce’s “My Personal Documents”.
