How to Enable Inline Editing in Salesforce?

Recently, I worked as a Salesforce Admin in an organization that uses Salesforce CRM. The sales team reviews the stages of various opportunities regularly and needs to update the stages of their respective deals. However, updating opportunity stages is very time-consuming.

As a solution, Salesforce has a feature called enable inline editing, which allows us to edit records directly from the list view, related lists, and record detail pages without opening the record.

Here, I will show you how to enable inline editing in Salesforce and how to edit the records from the list view. Additionally, we will see how we can mass edit records by Inline Editing in Salesforce.

Considerations for Inline Editing in Salesforce

  1. Ensure the user has field-level and object-level permissions to edit the records.
  2. In Salesforce, inline editing is not supported for all field types. Only text, number, picklist, and date fields are supported for inline editing.
  3. Read-only fields cannot be edited by using inline editing in Salesforce.

Enable Inline Editing in Salesforce

To enable inline editing in Salesforce, login to the Salesforce Org and follow the steps below.

1. On the Setup in Quick Find Box, search for User Interface under the Translation Workbench and click on User Interface.

Proof of concept:

To check how the inline editing works, navigate to any object and try to edit a field from the list view.

Image 1: Here, you can see that when we hover the cursor on the fields, if the pencil icon appears on them, that field can be edited with inline editing, and if the lock icon appears on the field, then it cannot be edited.

I’m going to update the Stage and Lead Source fields here. After updating, click the Save button.

Mass Edit Records by Inline Editing in Salesforce

For example, we need to modify the Opportunity records by changing multiple opportunities’ Stage and Type fields.

For that, we will see how we can update multiple records by using Inline editing in Salesforce.

1. Navigate to the object you want to edit mass records. Here, I’m going to update Opportunity records.

Then activate the checkbox Update selected items and click the Apply button. Click on the Save button.
