As a Salesforce admin I was working on a lead conversion report. The manager wanted to review the number of leads generated from the web and the conversion of those leads to customers over the last quarter. To create this type of report in Salesforce, we have a matrix report.
Here, I will explain matrix reports and their uses. Then, I will show you how to create matrix reports in Salesforce with a step-by-step explanation.
Matrix Report in Salesforce
The matrix report in Salesforce represents the data group of row and column in both ways, which allows the user to analyze the report in a two-dimensional format because it is a combination of row and column fields. This provides a unique perspective on displaying the data.
The following are the uses of matrix reports:
- As the matrix report is displayed in a multi-dimensional view, unlike a group of row and column fields, it is easy to understand statistics in reports.
- Using the matrix report, we can maintain our data accuracy and also give assurance to the customer without any miscalculations.
- This report makes it easy to summarize and analyze data, which saves time and leads to a faster decision-making process.
In Salesforce Lightning, we don’t have a matrix report as an option. To create this report, we need first we need to create a tabular, and then we can convert it into a matrix report.
Create Matrix Report in Salesforce
Using the following steps, we will create a matrix report to analyze the number of leads generated from the “web” and the lead status “closed-converted.”
1. If you already created a Report tab while creating an App, then you click on the Report tab.
OR
Click on App Launcher -> Search “Reports” -> Click on Reports. Then click the New Report button to create a report.

2. Then you can see the left sidebar, and under the Category, click on option All. Then select or search for the Object that you want to create a report or you can search that object.
Here, I have selected the Leads object. Then click on the Start Report button.

3. As we already discussed in the Salesforce Lightning report, there is no option for a matrix report. Then, we need to follow the below steps.
Click on Outline. -> You can see the Groups option. In that field, you need to search for and select the field that you want to group as rows. Here, I have selected the Lead Source field.
As we grouped the lead source field, the report has been created with lead source field grouping.

4. Then, you need to create a group with the columns. You can see the Group Columns option in that field. You need to search for and select the field that you want to group as a column. Here, I have selected the Lead Status field.

5. After selecting both fields, we can see that a report has been created, with the Lead Source field as a row and the Lead Status field as a column. This report is called the Matrix Report.
Here, we can easily see if we want to analyze the number of records “Lead Source = Web” and “Lead Status = Closed-Converted. “

This is how we can create a matrix report in Salesforce.
Conclusion
Now, I hope you have an idea about matrix reports in Salesforce and their uses. We have seen how to create matrix reports in Salesforce by creating tabular reports and then grouping tabular reports row and column-wise. I explained creating a reports with real-time scenarios and step-by-step explanations.
