The matrix report in Salesforce represents the data in matrix or grid format, which allows the user to analyze the report in two-dimensional format because the report is a combination of row and column fields.

We don’t have Matrix Report as an option in Salesforce Lightning. To create this report, we need first we need to create a tabular, and then we can convert it into a Matrix report.

As the matrix report displays row and column format, it is easy to summarize the data, and it provides a more comprehensive perspective to the user.

When can we use matrix report in Salesforce?

In the report, when we want to compare the data with two different fields and display this data according to these fields, then we can group these two fields in rows and columns, and we can display data for better understanding.

Example:

Let’s take an example of a Leads object. You want to know in Leads records how many leads are there that the Lead Source from Web and Company of that leads is TNR Corp.

How to Create Matrix Report in Salesforce Lightning

Using the following steps, we can create a matrix report in Salesforce.

1. When you log in to Salesforce Org, first you will see the Home Page. On this page you can see there is a dotted icon, it’s called App Launcher click on it.

Search for the Reports, and you will get the reports option under the Items. Click on the Reports option.

2. To create the new report, click on the New Report button right side top of the screen.

3. Then you can see the left sidebar, and under the Category, click on option All. Then select or search for the Object that you want to create a report or you can search that Object.

Here, I have selected the Account object. Then click on the Start Report button.

4. We have already discussed in the Salesforce Lightning report there is no option for a matrix report. Then we need to follow the below steps.

  • Click on the Outline. -> You can see the Groups option. in that field, you need to search and select the field that you want to group as rows. Here, I have selected Type Field.

5. You can see as we grouped the Type field, the report has been created with the Type field grouping.

Then, you need to create a group with the columns; you can see the Group Columns option in that field; you need to search and select the field that you want to group as a column. Here, I have selected the Rating Field.

6. After selecting both fields, we can see the Type field as a row and the Rating field as a column report has been created. This report is called the Matrix Report.

Here we can easily see if we want to analyze how many records “Type = Customer-Direct” and “Rating = Hot“.

How to Create Matrix Report in Salesforce Classic

Using the following steps, we can create a matrix report in Salesforce.

1. As you log in to Salesforce Classic, click on the Setup button. You will see the reports tab on the Navigation Bar. Click on the Report Tab.

2. To create the new report, click on the New Report button.

3. Then you need to Search or you can select the Object that you want to create a Report. Here, I have selected Leads Object and then clicked on the Create button.

4. In Salesforce Classic, we have the option to create the Matrix report. In the report, you can see the Preview option. On the dropdown list you will find the Matrix option, click on the Matrix option.

5. After clicking on the matrix option, you will see this type of display that gives the option to drag fields to groping. Here we need to drag the fields that we want to create a matrix report.

6. In the Fields option you can select the field or you can search the field that you want to group, After that drag and drop that field in Canva. Here, I have selected Lead Source Field.

7. Then you need to search for another field, After that drag and drop that field in Canva. Here, I have selected Company/Account.

8. After selecting both fields, we can see the Company/Account field as a row, and the Lead Source field as a column report has been created. This report we called as Matrix Report.
