Recently, a client asked us to add custom tabs to their Salesforce org setup to manage project-related tasks, tracking project milestones, deadlines, assigned team members, and client communication. This custom tab will help project managers and team members view and update project-related information in a single tab.
Now, we will discuss the process of adding tabs to objects and learn about the types of tabs in Salesforce.
Tabs in Salesforce
A Salesforce tab is a user interface element that allows you to navigate to objects, functions, app pages, and data. It represents the front end of your Salesforce experience.
Custom tabs let you display custom object data or other web content in Salesforce. When you add a custom tab to an app in Salesforce Classic, it appears as a tab. When you add a custom tab to an app in Lightning Experience, it appears as an item in the app’s navigation bar and in the App Launcher.
Types of Tabs in Salesforce
In Salesforce, we have the following types of tabs that we can create and customize according to our requirements.
- Custom Object tabs
- Web tabs
- Visualforce tabs
- Lightning component tabs
- Lightning page tabs
Custom Object tabs in Salesforce
Custom object tabs allow us to display custom object data or other web content in Salesforce. When you add a custom tab to an app in Salesforce Classic, it appears as a tab. When we add a custom tab to an app in the Lightning experience, it appears as an item in the app’s navigation bar and the App Launcher.
Create a Custom Object tab in Salesforce
To create a custom tab in Salesforce, navigate to the setup page and follow the steps below.
1. On Salesforce’s setup page, go to the quick find box and search, then select tabs under the heading User Interface.

2. In the tabs setup, go to the section Custom Object tab and click on the New button.

3. In this step, select the custom object from the Object lookup field for which you want to create the tab. After this, you can also select the Tab style.
Enter the description for the tab and click on the Next button.

4. In this step, we set the tab’s visibility and choose the user profiles for which the new custom tab will be available.
Here, we have two options: to set the tab visibility to be the same for all users or to set different visibility for different users.
To make visibility the same for all users, select the options from the dropdown menu under Apply one tab visibility to all profiles.
After selecting the tab visibility, click on the Next button.

5. Select the app on which you want to make this custom object tab visible, and to make it visible on all the apps, activate the include checkbox.
At last, click on the Save button.

Navigate to the app that you have selected for this custom object tab and click on the custom object tab.

This way, we can create a custom object tab in Salesforce Lightning by following the above steps.
Conclusion
I hope you understand the Tabs and Custom object tabs in Salesforce. By following the above steps, you will be able to create a custom object tab in Salesforce and organize the data in your org more efficiently.
