Every user has one profile, so let’s learn about Profile in Salesforce. So, in this tutorial, I will explain about the profiles in Salesforce and the steps to create a profile in Salesforce.
What is Profile in Salesforce with Example
Profile in Salesforce is the default setting and permission that users have. Every user has a profile, and every profile is related to the one-user license type. Every time you create a new user, you need to choose the profile.
Basically, if you want to know what users can do in Salesforce, you can see it from its profile. It defines which objects, records, and fields users can access, what type of action they can do, and what different permissions they have.
Additionally, it defines the CRUD operations that users can perform in Salesforce. It also lets the user know and control the
| Profile Detail | View and Edit the name, type, description, etc of the profile. |
| Field Level Security | Customize the settings, which users are only allowed to create, read, modify, and remove fields that meet certain criteria. |
| Page Layout | View and Edit different page layouts. |
| Record Types | Define and customize settings that limit the record types that particular Salesforce users may access. |
| Tabs and Apps | View and access to tabs and applications. |
| Login Settings | Permit users to log in during certain times and only when certain conditions are met. |
Furthermore, the Salesforce has two types of profiles: standard and custom. You can create the profile in both Salesforce Lightning and Salesforce Classic. Even in each edition except database.com, you can not create custom profiles, and you can also edit all the permissions and settings of custom profiles except the user license.
For example, in an organization, you have different users, and every user has a different task to do. A manager can access, create, edit, and delete all the objects, apps, fields, records, reports, etc, whereas the representative can only access, create, edit, and delete the things related to them.
So for this, in Salesforce, you create two different profiles specifying the actions they can perform and the permissions they have. For the above case, you can create Manager and Representative profiles, respectively.
Now, as I told you, there are standard profiles also in Salesforce; let’s try to understand what it is.
Standard Profiles in Salesforce
In simple terms, standard profiles are the profiles that are already created in Salesforce org. Standard profiles have pre-defined permissions and settings that you can assign to the users as per the requirement.
But there is one disadvantage: there are only limited settings in Salesforce standard profiles, and also, the admin can not customize all the settings as needed. Only a limited number of settings are allowed for editing.
How to Create Profile in Salesforce
Below are the steps to create a profile in Salesforce.
Step-1: Navigate to the Setup, search Profiles in Quick Find, and click on it.

Step-2: Find the Profile that you want to clone as per the User Licenses they have and click on Clone next to it.
You can also click on the New Profile button at the top to create a new profile.
