Here we are creating the phone field type in Salesforce Lightning.
Consider a scenario: We are using the contact object. Inside this contact object, we want to add the phone number field as a phone field, which is used for calling the employees by simply picking the phone number from the phone field.
The users can enter any phone number inside the phone number fields and the character limit of the phone number field is up to 40.
Here are the following steps:
1. Go to the Gear icon –> Click on the Setup option –> Select the Object Manager tab.
2. Enter the contact object in the search box. The contact object comes at the top; click on the contact object.
3. Click on the Fields and Relationships option that is present under the details section.
4. Here, we want to create a new field. So, for this, click on the New button.
5. Here, we are selecting the Salesforce phone data type checkbox that permits the user to enter any phone number.
6. Now enter the details; first, fill in the Field Label as Phone Number, and then fill in the field name by simply clicking on it; the field name will be automatically filled. Click on the next button.
7. Now establish field-level security. Now select the profiles to which we want to grant edit access to this field via field-level security. Click on the Next button.
8. Now, add the custom field to the page layout. Select the page layout that should include this field. This field will be added as the last field in the first 2-column section of this page layout. Click on the save button.
9. Click on the app launcher and enter sales in the search box. Select sales, the sales page is open and then select the contact object.
The contact object record page is open. There is a details section, and under this section, we can see that the phone field type is created. We can enter the phone number related to the contact in the phone field.

Here we are creating the phone field type in Salesforce Classic.
Consider a scenario in which we are using the object inside the contract object. We want to add the contractor phone number field as a phone field.
Here are the following steps:
1. Click on the Profile Picture –> Click on the Switch to Salesforce Classic option –> Select the Setup option.
2. Enter the lead in the Quick Find Box. Click on the contract drop-down menu. The drop-down list is open; under this drop-down list, there is a field option. Click on the Fields option.
3. The contract custom field page is open. Scroll to the bottom of the page. There is a Contract Custom Fields & Relationships section. For creating the new field click on the new button.
4. Here, we are selecting the salesforce phone data type checkbox. Click on the next button.
5. Now enter the details; first, fill in the Field Label as Contractor Phone Number and then fill in the field name. Click on the next button.
6. Now establish the field-level security. Select the profiles to which we want to grant edit access to this field via field-level security. Click on the next button.
7. Now, add the custom field to the page layout. Select the page layout that should include this field. It will be added as the last field in the first two-column section of this page layout. Click on the save button.
