While working as a Sales employee in the Salesforce company that is based in the United State Of America. I got a task where I needed to change the values display in the lookup field in Salesforce.
To fulfill this requirement, I use the object that is present under the object manager, and after opening the object use the search layout to change the values displayed in the lookup field. This search layout option is present under all the objects like contacts, leads, opportunities, etc.
So, after looking at the multiple solutions, I found the best way to change the values display in the lookup field. Let’s learn how to change the values displayed in the lookup field in Salesforce Lightning and Salesforce Classic.
How to change the values displayed in a lookup field in Salesforce Lightning
Here we are changing the values displayed in the lookup field in Salesforce Lightning. Here we are taking an example: a company hires employees to solve cases related to their product.
Here the employee wants to change the value display in the lookup field of the case object we can create a case and click on the field to add the contact, and this will display under the contact name and the account name only. For this, click on the search layout of the contact, the employee can see the phone number field is present at the last second number, and they want to change this value of the phone number field to the value of the account number field.
If you want to learn how to change the values of the display in the lookup field in salesforce lightning, follow these steps:
Step-1: Firstly, log in to the salesforce account. When we login into the account, the salesforce lightning org is open. Here we can change the values displayed in the lookup field. To change the value of the lookup field, we go to our gear icon.
After clicking on the gear icon, the drop-down list of the gear icon is open. Under this gear icon, there are two options. The first one is Setup, and another one is Service Setup.
Here we click on the Setup option. After clicking on the Setup option, the Setup page is open. Under this setup page, the object manager tab is present on the nav bar. Click on the object manager tab.

Step-2: Here, we can see the Object Manager page is open. Many objects are present, and we want to select one of the objects.
So we enter the contact object in the search box, and the contact object comes at the top of the page. After reaching the object at the top, select the contact object with API Name as an opportunity and the type as a Standard object.

Step-3: After selecting the contact object, the contact page is open. Here we can see the details related to the contact object. And on the left side of the page, many options are present.
We can click on any of the options we want, and here we want to click on the search layout for changing the value display in the lookup field.

Step-4: The contact search layout page opens after clicking on the search layout option. Here we can see that the profile and under this profile are many profiles present. See the default layout, under this default profile, lots of columns are displayed.
And we can see that the account name is present at the second value but here, we want to display the phone at the second value. To change this value, click the edit button that comes up by clicking on the drop-down arrow.

Step-4: The edit search layout page opens after clicking on the edit button. Here we can see the contact search results. Here we can see the available fields and the selected fields. In the selected fields, we can see that lots of fields are present. And here, we can change the Second field account name to the phone field.
For this, we select the phone field and click on the Up arrow until they reach their perfect position.

Step-5: After Changing the value of the phone field, now scroll to the bottom of the edit search layout. There is a save button that can save the changes to the page. Click on the save button.

Step-6: After clicking on the save button the changing value displayed in the lookup field is shown under the default layout profile.

Step-7: After changing the contact value from the search layout, we can see that the phone number is displayed in the lookup field of the case. Click on the case contact name, the drop-down menu appears, and we can see that the contact name with phone number is displayed.

How to change the values displayed in a lookup field in Salesforce Classic
Here we are changing the values displayed in the lookup field in Salesforce Classic. Here we are taking an example. We are using the contact object from where we change the value of the email from the search layout displayed in the lookup field of the case object.
If you want to learn how to change the values display in the lookup field in salesforce classic, follow these steps:
1: Log in to the Salesforce account; when we log in to the Salesforce account, the Salesforce lightning page is open but we want to login to the classic version. For this, we click on the profile picture. After clicking on the profile picture, the drop-down menu is open. Under this drop-down menu, there is a switch to the Salesforce classic option is present.
Click on the Switch to Salesforce Classic option, the Salesforce Classic edition is open. Now we can change the value display in the lookup field in Salesforce Classic.
So, we click on the contact object on the nav bar, and after clicking on the contact object the contact page is open. Here we can see that lots of objects are present, and we are selecting the one contact that is Cartwright, Forrest.

2: The Forrest Cartwright contact page opens after clicking on the Forrest Cartwright contact. Here we can see that contact detail, and above the contact detail, we see some options are present, and we click on the edit layout option.

3: The edit layout page opens after clicking on the edit layout option. Now scroll to the bottom of the page, and there is a search layout option on the left side of the page. Click on the search layout option.

4: The contact search layout page opens after clicking on the search layout option. Here we can see that the profile and under this profile are many profiles present. See the search result under layout.
And we can see that the account name is present at the third value, but here we want to display the email at the third value. To change this value, click on the edit button at the front of the search results.

5: The edit search layout page opens after clicking on the edit button. Here we can see the contact search results. Here we can see the available fields and the selected fields. In the selected fields we can see that lots of fields are present. And here we can change the third field account name to the email field.
For this, we select the email field and click on the Up arrow until they reach their perfect position.

6: After Changing the value of the email field, now scroll to the bottom of the edit search layout there is a save button that can save the changes to the page. Click on the save button.

7: After clicking on the save button the changing value displayed in the lookup field is shown under the layouts of search results.
