What is Schema Builder in Salesforce
Salesforce schema builder is a tool for visualizing and editing data models. It is a dynamic environment for viewing and altering all objects and relationships.
Schema builder is used as a pictorial representation of all the objects, fields, and their relationship and has a drag-drop interface that is used to perform all the activities.
Access Schema Builder in Salesforce
1. Click on the “Gear” icon on the right and select the “Setup” option.

2. After clicking on Setup, there is a “Quick Find” box. Search for the “Schema Builder” and then click to open it.

3. After opening the schema builder, you will see the blank schema builder canvas, as shown below.

Open Schema Builder in Salesforce Classic
The following are the steps to open schema builder in Salesforce Classic:
1. Log in to the Salesforce account, then click on the “Setup” icon. Then, from the “Quick Find” box, search for “Schema Builder” and click on it.

2. It will open the schema builder in the Classic Interface.

How to Use Schema Builder in Salesforce
Once you have access to Salesforce’s schema builder, you can create objects and fields.
The following are the steps to create a schema builder in Salesforce:
Step-1: For creating the schema builder, first click on the “Elements Tab” that is present on the left sidebar.

Step-2: Drag and drop the “Objects” onto the schema builder canvas, fill in the details, and “Save” it.

Step-3: We create a field using the schema builder. The field can be created on existing objects. From the “Elements” tab, we choose a “Field Type” and drag-drop it onto the “Object” we created.

Step-4: After dragging the field, fill out all the details and click on the “Save” option.

Create Custom Object with Schema Builder in Salesforce
Here are the following steps:
1. On the Salesforce Lightning Setup page, search for the Schema Builder in the Quick Find box and select Schema Builder under the Objects and Fields section.

2. In the Schema builder setup, click on the element tab and drag the Object field to the page area.

3. As we drop the Object to the page area, a pop-up window will appear. In this window, we will enter the required details for the new custom object.
- In the Label field, enter the name of the custom object. In this example, I have entered the label as an opportunity item.
- In the Plural Label field, enter the plural form of the object name, like opportunities item for opportunity item.
- In Start With field select if the object is starting with a vowel or consonant.
- Activate the checkboxes Allow Reports, Allow Activities, and Track Field History to make this object accessible to Reports and Activities.
- Activate the radio button Deployed and click on the Save button.

4. Now we have created the object and to view this custom object, click on the dropdown arrow of the created object and select option View Object.

5. As we click on the View Object, a new window will appear showing the Details of the created custom object with Schema builder.

Create Custom Field with Schema Builder in Salesforce
Here are the following steps:
1. Enter the Schema Builder in the Quick Find Box, click on the Elements tab, select a field from the Fields section, and drag to an object in the Schema. In this example, I have added a Picklist field to a custom object Survey.

2. As we drop the field to the object, a pop-up window will appear where we have to enter the details to define the new custom field.
- In the Field Label, enter the name for the custom field.
- The Field Name will be auto-filled according to the entered Field Label.
- Add a description for the custom field in the Description field. It is optional to add a description.
- Since I have added the Picklist field, I have to add Values as well. In this example, I have added values such as Employee Feedback, Market research, Product evaluation, and Event Feedback.
- Click on the Save button to apply changes.

3. The custom field will be added to the object and to view the field, click on the dropdown of the object and select View Object.

Delete Custom Objects & Fields using Schema Builder in Salesforce
1. Search “Schema Builder” in the “Quick Find” box.

2. Click on the “Objects” tab, then search for the “Object Name” that you want to delete from the schema builder.

3. The object will appear on the schema builder preview page. Right-click on the custom field that you want to delete and click on the “Delete Field” option.

4. The confirmation dialog box appears; check the checkbox and click on the “Delete” button.
