Why user get locked in Salesforce?
There are three main reasons.
- Exceeds Login Attempts.
- Improbable Activity.
- Administrative Lock.
Let’s understand this in brief
Exceeds Login Attempts – In this, a Salesforce user gets locked when he exceeds Log in attempts more than the number of allowed attempts by the admin. This security protects the Org. if any other user trying to log in to Salesforce Org.
Improbable Activity – If any unusual behavior is detected, like maximum log-in from different IP ranges or unusual data access, the system locks that user to prevent further unauthorized access.
Administrative Lock – the Salesforce admin can lock the user intentionally; this is done when the user leaves the organization or when the role of the user gets changed. Admin can disable it permanently for security reasons.
How to know a locked Salesforce user?
By checking user status – In Salesforce, there is a user detail page where we can see each user’s account status individually. If the user gets locked, it will indicate that.
By Email notification – Salesforce sends an email notification to an administrator and other user who gets locked, and it also mentions the reason why that user gets locked.
By Audit Log – In Salesforce, track the history of all activity. There, we can check locked user accounts. the audit log also provides detailed records of user activity, including login attempts and lockout events.
How to Unlock User Accounts in Salesforce Lightning
Using the following steps, we can unlock the user account in Salesforce Lightning.
1. On the home page, Click on the “Gear icon”, then select “Setup” from the dropdown.
2. On the setup page, “Quick Find Box” -> Search ” Users” -> Click on “Users”.

3. Select the user who got locked. and there you can see the “Unlock” button simply click on that button.

4. Now, you need to reset the password and send a new password to the user. Salesforce will send the email notification to a user’s email address.

How to Unlock User Accounts in Salesforce Classic
Using the following steps, we can unlock the user account in Salesforce Classic.
1. Go to Setup -> in Quick Find Box -> Search “Users” -> Click on “Users“.

2. Click on the User, there is an option to “Unlock“.

3. Now, you have to reset the password and send a new password to the user. Salesforce will send the email notification to a user’s email address.
