Text Field in Salesforce
In Salesforce, the text field is used to capture the alphanumerical characters or text data. We can create the text field on any type of object because the text is useful for writing important information like descriptions, comments, details related to the objects and products, etc.
For example, there is a furniture shop that sells lots of wood products. A person goes to the furniture shop and wants to buy a computer table and a chair. After buying the things, they calculate the cost of these two things.
Whether the furniture that they buy fits into their budget or not, the person describes their expenses and how, within this budget, they can buy these two things. So, for this, the Buyer creates a text field in which they can write a combination of letters, numbers, or symbols.

Maximum Length of Text Field in Salesforce
The maximum length of a text field in Salesforce is 255 characters. This type of text field is acceptable for smaller or shorter text field entries, such as titles, names, descriptions, etc.

Create a Salesforce Text Field in Lightning
Here we are creating the text field type in Salesforce Lightning.
Consider a scenario: we are using the expense object. We want to add the expense detail field as a text field in which the seller can provide cost details related to the computer table, electric chair, etc.
Here are the following steps:
1. Go to the gear icon, click on the setup option and then select the object manager tab.
2. Here, we want to select the Expense object. For selecting the expense object, enter the expense object in the search box. The expense object comes at the top. Click on the expense object.
3. There is a details section in which the Fields & Relationships option is present. Click on the Fields & Relationships option.
4. For creating the field type click on the New button.
5. Here, we are selecting the Text checkbox. The text field allows the users to enter any type of combination of letters, numbers, or symbols. We can also enter up to 255 characters on separate lines and then click on the next button.
6. Now enter the details. First, fill the Field Label as Expense Detail and then fill the Length as 255. After that, fill the Field Length and then fill the field name by simply clicking on the field. Click on the next button.
7. Now establish field-level security. Now select the profiles to which we want to grant edit access to this field via field-level security. If we do not add field-level security, the field will be hidden from all profiles. Click on the next button.
8. Select the page layout that should include this field. This field will be added as the last field in the first two-column section of this page layout. If we do not select a layout, the field will not appear on any pages. Click on the save button.
9. Go to the app launcher and enter sales in the search box. Select sales, the sales page is open, and then select the expense object present in the nav bar.
The expense object record page is open. Select the record and there is a details section. Under this section, the text field type is created, and we can enter the expense details related to the expense in the expense detail field.

Create Text Field in Salesforce Classic
Here we are creating the text field type in Salesforce Classic.
Here, we are taking an example: we are using the product object inside the product object. We want to add the product description field as a text field.
Here are the following steps:
1. If you are in Salesforce Lightning org then to switch in the Salesforce Classic, click on the Profile as shown in the below picture and then click on Switch to Salesforce Classic. Select the Setup option.
2. Enter the Products in the Quick Find Box. Click on the product drop-down menu. The drop-down list is open; under this drop-down list, there is a field option. Click on the fields option.
3. The product custom field page is open. Scroll to the bottom of the page. There is a product custom field and a relationship section. For creating the new field click on the new button.
4. Here, we are selecting the text checkbox. Click on the next button.
5. Now enter the details. First, fill in the Field Label as Product Description and then fill in the Length as 255. After that, fill the Field Length and then fill in the field name by simply clicking on the field. Click on the next button.
6. Now establish the field-level security. Now select the profiles to which we want to grant edit access to this field via field-level security. Click on the next button.
7. Now, add the custom field to the page layout. Select the page layout that should include this field. The field will not appear on any pages if we do not select a layout. Click on the save button.
