While working as a Salesforce system admin, I got a requirement from the sales team that they need a customized log a call action to track additional details.
In this Salesforce tutorial, I will explain how to customize a log a call action according to the sales team’s requirements and guide you through editing the log a call layout in the Salesforce Lightning experience.
“Log a call” is an Activity tab on the Salesforce Lightning record pages. Its role is to record the interaction between the user and the customer. However, there could be requirements requiring more options or fields in the Log a call action.
Customize the Log a Call in Salesforce Lightning
Log a call is an action that includes fields like Subject, Comment, Name, and Related To fields. However, there could be various cases where we need more fields in the Log a call activity.
Below are the steps to customize the log call in Salesforce Lightning.
Note: Here please note that we are not customizing the existing Log a call action. Because the Log a call action is a standard action for many Objects in Salesforce Lightning. So, for this implementation, we will create a new log a call type action in Salesforce Lightning.
1. First, open the Home Setup Page in Salesforce by clicking the Gear icon (⚙️) and selecting the Setup option.

4. After this, click on the Buttons, Links, and Actions option from the left menu in Salesforce Lightning.

5. Next, click on the New Action button on the Buttons, Links, and Actions page. This will take you to a page where you can create a new action for the Account object.

6. Next, for the new action button, specify the following options:
| Options | Option Content |
|---|---|
| Action Type | Log a Call |
| Label | Log a Account |
| Name | Log_a_Account |
| Description | This action will capture the log related to the account |
After specifying the content for the options, click on the Save button.

7. Once we click on the Save button, we are redirected to the Layout page for the Log a Account action.
- Now, from this page, we can select the set of fields that we want for our action.
- For example, if we want the Status field for the Log a Account action, we need to drag the button from the Tasks Fields section to the below section.
- In the last, click on the Save button to save the changes.

8. Add the new action (Log a Account) button to the Activity Timeline. To do this, click on the Page Layout option from the side menu of the Account Object Manager page.
9. After this, click on the Account Layout option. Then, it will open the Page Layout for the Account object.

10. Next, drag the Log a Account button from the Mobile & Lightning Actions section to the Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions section. In the last, click on the Save button.

After following the above steps, we have successfully created a customized log a call action in Salesforce Lightning for the Account object.
Moreover, this Log a Account action will appear under the Activity Timeline for each Account record.

Following the above steps, you can customize the log a call action in Salesforce Lightning.
