How to Add a Chatter Component to Record Page in Salesforce Lightning

In this Salesforce tutorial, we will learn to add a chatter component to a record page in Salesforce. The feature of adding or removing a component like Chatter from the pages is only possible in Salesforce Lightning.

Chatter in Salesforce

In Salesforce, Chatter provides a platform for users to collaborate and communicate within the organization. It allows users to connect, share information, and collaborate on real-time projects. It features a social feed where users can post updates, share files, and comment on posts.

In Chatter we can also create groups for users where users can interact and collaborate in a specific group. 

Adding a Chatter Component to Record Page

By adding the Chatter component to the Record page, we can have access to Chatter activities within the Record page of the objects. On adding the Chatter component to the record page, users don’t have to jump from one page to another which saves a lot of time and improves efficiency in maintaining records.

While working as a System admin for an organization that uses Salesforce CRM as their primary CRM tool, I was assigned the task of adding a Chatter component to the Opportunity record page so that the Sales team can manage Opportunites and Chatter activity related to that on the same page.

I decided to add a Chatter component to the record page with the help of Lightning App Builder.

Along with adding Chatter to the Lightning record page, I will also explain the method to add the Chatter component to the custom record page in Salesforce Lightning.

Add a Chatter Component to Record Page in Salesforce Lightning

To add a Chatter component to the Record Page in Salesforce Lightning, log in to your Salesforce developer account and follow the below steps.

1. Navigate to the Sales application of the org, and for that click on the App Launcher and search then select Sales.

2. In the Sales application, click on the object tab in which you have to add chatter on the record page. In this example, I have selected the Opportunities tab to add a chatter component on its record page.

3. In the object tab, select any record to access the record page.

4. On the record page, click on the settings icon that is on the upper right side of the screen, and from the options in the dropdown select Edit Page.

5. As we click on the Edit page, the lightning app builder will open. In the template region click on the Related Lists section showing Details and Activity, then on the left side of the screen click on the button Add tab.

6. In the new tab select the Chatter from the list of tabs and click on the Done button.

7. Click on the Chatter tab on the edit page and from the left sidebar select and drag the Chatter component to the page.

8. After adding the Chatter component, click on the Save button to apply changes.

As we click on the Save button, the Chatter component will be added to the record page of the selected lightning record page.

I have added the Chatter component to the Opportunity Record page so, I will open any opportunity record and on the Opportunity record page, we can see the Chatter tab in the Activity section of the page.

Create a Custom Record Page with a Chatter component in Salesforce Lightning

To create a custom record page with a Chatter component in Salesforce Lightning, navigate to the setup page of Salesforce Lightning and follow the below steps.

1. On the Setup page of Salesforce Lightning, go to the Quick Find box and search then select Lightning App Builder under the heading User Interface.

2. In the Lightning App Builder window, click on the New button to create a custom Lightning record page.

3. In this window, select the Lightning page type as Record Type and then click on the Next button.

4. In the Label field enter the name for the custom record page and in the Object field select the object in which you have to add this record page, and click on the Next button.

5. In this step, select a template for the custom record page and click on the Done button.

6. Now in the edit window of the lightning app builder add the components from the left sidebar to the template region by dragging and dropping the components to the template region.

7. After adding the tab component to the template region, click on the Add Tab button on the right sidebar.

8. Click on the new tab and from the options select Chatter and click on the Done button.

9. On the page template, click on the Chatter tab, and from the list of standard components on the left side bar select and drag the Chatter component to the Chatter tab.

10. After adding the Chatter component click on the Save button.

As we click on the Save button the Chatter component will be added to the Custom Record page.

In this way, we have added a Chatter component to a Custom Record Page in Salesforce Lightning.
