While working as a Salesforce admin recently, we received a lead from the marketing campaign who expressed an interest in buying the product.
So, our sales representative scheduled a call with that lead to better understand the requirements and budget. After contacting the lead, the sales rep decided to convert this lead.
Here, I will explain lead conversion in Salesforce and later show you how to convert leads in Salesforce with an example and step-by-step explanation.
What is Lead Conversion in Salesforce?
In Salesforce, the term “Lead Conversion Process“ refers to the workflow that a company or a business uses to turn a potential customer, a Lead, into a qualified account, contact, or opportunity. This conversion means they are now eligible to access your product or service. The progression of your lead in the sales funnel requires an organized lead conversion process in Salesforce.
Consideration for converting leads in Salesforce
- When converting leads, ensure that all essential fields map correctly to accounts, contacts, and opportunities. Custom fields should be mapped correctly to keep the essential data safe.
- There is no way to convert a lead to an existing opportunity.
- Ensure users have the correct permissions to convert leads and access the resulting records.
We have the following two ways to convert the Leads:
- Convert a Lead in Salesforce.
- Use the Convert Action Button to Convert the Leads.
Convert Leads in Salesforce
In Salesforce, leads can be converted to accounts, contacts, or opportunities. In the following steps, I explained how to convert leads in Salesforce.
- On the Home Page. -> Click on the App Launcher. -> Then open the Sales App.

- In the Sales app, click on the Leads tab.

- Select the lead record that you want to convert. Here, I’m converting Carolyn Crenshaw’s record.

- Then, click on the Converted stage on the Lead Process bar.

- After clicking the converted button, that means the lead process has been completed, and you can convert this lead. Next, click on the Select Converted Status button.

- Now, you will see the Convert Lead window. You can see the Account, Contact, and Opportunity objects displayed in that window. This means you can convert leads by creating New records or choosing an existing record.
- Choose Existing: If you have already created an Account Contact or Opportunity, you can merge the new lead into the existing one.
- You can also see the Checkbox for Don’t Create Opportunity upon Conversion, which means you can convert a lead into an Account and Contact without converting it into an Opportunity.

- Now, select the Record Owner to convert the lead into an account, contact, or opportunity. Also, choose the Converted Status. After filling in the fields, click on Convert.

- As you click the Convert button, you will see that your lead has been converted to an account, contact, and opportunity.

- The screenshot below shows a lead successfully converted to an account, as Ace Iron and Steel Inc Pvt Ltd’s record is now showing in the Account tab of the Sales app.

This is how we can convert leads into accounts, contacts, or opportunities in Salesforce.
