In this Salesforce tutorial, we will learn to update or change field-level security in Salesforce. We will discuss the method of updating field-level security for the object fields in Salesforce Lightning and Salesforce Classic editions respectively.

Field Level Security in Salesforce

In Salesforce, we have the feature of Field level security and with the help of this, we can control the visibility and access of the custom and standard object fields to the user profiles or permission sets of users in the organization.

The Field-level security ensures that the field’s data is accessible by authorized users, which helps maintain data security and privacy within the Salesforce organization.

Updating Field Level Security in Salesforce

In Salesforce object fields we can also update the field-level security, and this is done with the modification of permissions access for specific fields within an object to control which users or profiles can view or edit those fields.

It is very crucial from the security viewpoint of the org. data to update field-level security, which ensures maintaining data security and privacy within the Salesforce organization.

To update field-level security in Salesforce Lightning, navigate to the Setup page of Salesforce Lightning and follow the below steps.

1. On the Setup page of Salesforce Lightning, click on the Object Manager tab.

2. In the Object Manager window, we can see a list of standard and custom objects, and from here select an object in which you have to update the field-level security.

In this case, I have selected the object Campaign to update field-level security.

3. In the Setup window of the selected object, click on Fields and Relationships in the left sidebar.

4. In the Fields and Relationships, select the field in which you have to update the field-level security. In this example, I have selected the field Contacts in Campaign.

5. Click on the button Set Field-level Security.

6. In the field-level security setup of the field, we can see a list of profiles in the column Field-level Security for Profile.

Activate or deactivate the check boxes of the profiles that you to add or remove from this field and then click on the Save button.

As we click on the Save button, the field-level security of the selected field will be updated with the changes.

In this way, we have successfully changed or modified the field-level security of an object field with the help of the above steps in Salesforce Lightning.

To update field-level security in Salesforce Classic, log in and switch to the Salesforce Classic version, after that follow the steps below.

1. On the Home Page of Salesforce Classic, click on the Setup tab that is on the upper left side of the screen.

2. In the Setup of Salesforce Classic, go to the Build section on the left side and click on Customize dropdown.

3. In the Customize dropdown click on the object in which you have to add a field-level security. I have selected the object opportunities in this example.

4. In the Fields setup of the selected object, we can see a list of custom and standard fields of the object and from here select a field in which you have to change field-level security.

In this example, I have selected the opportunity standard field Price Book.

5. Now in the next window, click on the button Set Field-level Security.

6. In the Field-level security setup we can see the list of profiles in the column Field-Level Security for Profile. Here, activate the checkboxes of the profiles that you want to add or give access to this field.

In the way same way deactivate the checkboxes of the profile that you want to remove from this field.

7. After adding or removing profiles click on the Save button.

As we click on the Save button, the field-level security of the selected field will be updated according to the changes applied.
